What is a child that you care not as you pass?
Shall the sins of the fathers be visited here –
Who gave you the right to take God’s holy law
And condemn little children as if sanctified?
They are born, they hunger, sicken, often die
And we watch and break our hearts and wish
That for all it was a lovely rich, green world –
But if wishes were horses, beggars would ride.
So many things are so.simple and save lives –
Rehydration, immunisation, vaccination, education.
What those words say to all is that we care,
We truly care about those who are of no account.
No account to whom? Not to the Lord God Almighty
Who notes even the death of a solitary sparrow.
How much more must the death of 14 million children
Cause anguish in heaven and rage at our arrogance.
Children are the future of a planet sore beset
All the ills of mankind must surely come home,
And the millstone has truly been tied to our necks
Because we have not suffered little children to come.
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, weeping or not,
The children of our world deserve so much more –
Their lot should not be ‘locked in a stone cold tomb’,
For He died upon the Cross to save all Mankind.
Help us once again to meet the needs of children,
Help us to do all the good and right things for them,
Never let a child be born wishing it had not so been –
Let us try to make all children rejoice that they live.
