The card games we played when we were very young
Remain with us as most joyous memories-
SNAP! OLD MAID! and our dear HAPPY FAMILIES,
Calling to mind fires, crumpets and hot chestnuts.
Fat Mr Bunn the Baker with Mrs Miss and Master,
Stern Mr Chalk the Schoolmaster with cane en famille,
Blue aproned Mr Lamb the Butcher with his cleaver
And Mrs Lamb all smiles, Miss Lamb and Master Lamb.
In all that lexicon of Happy Families
Not once do I recall Mr Mortar the Builder;
One weekend in July 1983 I realised why –
NO progress on house so NO Happy Family.
Week of 18 July Mr Bunn the Builder repented,
Urged on by Mrs Bunn, he got up and got on.
Linings, mortar, air con – the house took shape.
She feared to praise lest he cease to work.
Dear Mr. Bunn the Builder at Toolijooa,
Do not stay your men from labouring.
My darling house will be a joy for ever
Built kindly and lived in by us ‘Happy Ever After’.
